Solution to Vixen's Sapphire Bracelet
1) 27
The median would be the average of the two middle numbers in the list of 6 prices. If the price of the bracelet is not one of the two middle numbers, this would make the median either the average of 20 and 25 or the average of 25 and 30, neither of which are 26. Therefore, the price of the bracelet has to be one of the middle numbers along with 25, so the average of the price of the bracelet and $25 is $26. This means it must be $27 since the average of 25 and 27 is 26.
2) 9:20
The alarm rings for six times in total, which means it has rung 5 times since Vixen woke up at 8:00. This means 5 x 15 = 75 minutes has passed, which is equal to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Therefore the sixth ring occurs at 9:15. Vixen wakes up five minutes after this at 9:20.
3) Sam
Arya’s statement is consistent with what we know about the alarm clock. The fifth ring occurred 4 x 15 = 60 minutes after the first one. 60 minutes after 8:00 (the time of the first ring) is 9:00. The sixth ring occurred 15 minutes later at 9:15.
Laura’s claim is consistent with what Arya claimed. Since Arya came back at some time between 9:00 and 9:15 after spending 20 minutes in the bathroom, she would have left her room at some time between 8:40 and 8:55. The time that Laura gives, 8:50, is consistent with this.
Sam’s claim is false since the fourth ring occurs 3 x 15 = 45 minutes after the first one, at 8:45.
4) Sam, 1 pound
Laura claims to be 3 pounds less than Vixen, which would be 102 - 3 = 99 pounds. This is true. Although Arya’s claim that she weighs more than Sam turned out to be false, this means she weighs less than she claims, not more. In order to have a weight between Arya and Laura, Sam would have to weigh 100 pounds. Since she actually weighs 101 pounds, she is 1 pound heavier than she claimed.
