Solution to The Mad Scientist
1) Felicity, Garfield, Ford, Hope
This problem can be solved by using an equation analogous to Distance = Rate x Time. In this example, distance is the amount of money earned, rate is the amount of money earned per hour, and time is the number of hours. The amount of money earned divided by the hourly rate is equal to the amount of hours an employee worked that day. Since they all started working at 9:30 am, anybody who worked more than 11.5 hours would have still been working for at least part of the time from 9:30 pm to 12:00 am.
Carlos: 336/42 = 8
Felicity: 546/42 = 13
Garfield: 630/42 = 15
Cheshire: 420/42 = 10
Hatch: 462/42 = 11
Ford: 504/42 = 12
Gatelyn: 336/42 = 8
Hope: 504/42 = 12
Felicity, Garfield, Ford, and Hope worked for over 11.5 hours
2) Dioxide Cyani and Diquat Methanoi
First solve for p using the first equation. p^3 + 25 = 89. p = 4. Plug this in the second equation to end up with s^2 = 81. s = 9. 4 corresponds to the letter d and 9 corresponds to the letter i. Dioxide Cyani and Diquat Methanoi both begin with d and end with i.
3) 4.5
A working day is equal to 8 hours. If we equal both equations in a system of equations where x is the amount of time needed for preparation and y is the amount of time for the drug to be effective, we get the following:
3x - 2y = 8 + 3
2x + 2^3(y) = (8/2) x 3
When simplified:
3x - 2y = 11
2x + 8y = 12
When simplified further:
3x - 2y = 11
x + 4y = 6
Therefore x = 6 - 4y which can be substituted into the first equation to get 3(6 - 4y) - 2y = 11 which simplifies to 18 - 14y = 11. y = 1/2. This can be substituted into either the 1st or 2nd equation to end up with x = 4. Added together the two times equal 4.5 hours
4) Room F & Room C
The number could be either the radius, diameter, or floor area of the lab building since those are three values that you can find based on the circumference. Since circumference = pi x diameter, the diameter is 25/3.14 = 7.96 meters. This rounds to 8. If this is the number then room B would really be J (as this is 8 letters later) and room Y would really be room G. However this is not an answer choice.
The radius is half of the diameter, 7.96/2 = 3.98 meters which rounds to 4. If this is the number then room B would really be room F and room Y would really be room C. This is an answer choice and is therefore correct.
Area = pi x radius^2, so it is equal to 3.14 x 3.98^2 = 49.8. This rounds to 50. If this is the number then room B would really be Room Z and Room Y would really be Room W. However this is not an answer choice
5) Dr. Felicity
Since the Mad Scientist wouldn’t be able to start working on making the chemical until after 5:30, it would take until 10:00 for the chemical to have an effect since 4.5 hours after 5:30 is 10:00. Dr. Felicity and Dr. Garfield are the only scientists left at this time, however Dr. Felicity is the only one who would be in one of the rooms, Room F.
