Solution to Cyberattack Situation
1) Thursday
To figure out the 7th number in the sequence, you need to find out by how much the numbers in the series are increasing at each step. To do this, find x and y. Since they are equally far away from the numbers adjacent to them, they are actually the average of the two numbers next to them. Therefore x is 4 and y is 10. The first 5 numbers of the series are 1, 4, 7, 10, 13 meaning it increases by 3 each time. You can also tell that the common difference is 3 by doing 7-1 or 13-7 and dividing by 2 as these numbers are two apart. Keep adding 3 to extend the sequence to 7 numbers. The 7th number is 19 which makes it the number corresponding to the 7th week.
Since the work week is 5 days long, each time you add 5 days to Tuesday you arrive back on Tuesday. Since 15 is divisible by 5, the 15th day after Tuesday is Tuesday. Therefore the 19th day after Tuesday is 4 days later, Monday
2) 69 58 46
To find the amount of time it takes each of them divide the amount of words by the typing speed in words per minute.
Matthew: 6900/100 = 69
Clara: 6900/120 = 57.5
Richard: 6900/150 = 46
3) 2
The only number not seen in the picture of the 3 dice throws is 6. Through using deduction, it is possible to figure out through the picture what number is opposite to 6. We can see that 2 is adjacent to 1, 3, 4, and 5. This means that the only number that can be opposite from 2 is 6. Therefore the opposite number to 6 is 2.
4) 85
85 is the only of the 3 numbers in which the product of its digits is 40 and the sum of its digits is 13.
5) Matthew
Since we know Richard entered second, the executives either entered the room in the order of Matthew, Richard, Clara or Clara, Richard, Matthew. If Matthew went first, Richard would finish after 69 + 46 = 115 minutes. This would mean he would leave the room at 1:55 and there would be a 15 minute break until Clara entered. This would mean there’s nobody in the room at 2 pm and the key isn’t distributed, which did not happen. Therefore Clara must have gone first, with Richard finishing after 58 + 46 = 104 minutes at 1:44. Matthew then entered after 15 minutes at 1:59 and received the key at 2 pm, meaning he’s the one that used it to perform the cyberattack.
